Characteristics
Lychees belong to the family Sapindaceae. They are trees and shrubs with more than 1000 species. The evergreen lychee trees can grow up to 30 metres high, produce red or orange-pink fruits with a hard, bumpy skin that comes off easily and resemble large raspberries. They have white flesh and a single, large, inedible pit. They are juicy with a distinct, slightly acidic aroma and taste similar to grapes. They are mainly produced in SE Asia, China, India and South Africa.
